How Horses Saved Me - and How They Can Save You, Too!
When I was a little girl, my dad passed away pretty suddenly right before my 7th birthday.
I remember the time shortly thereafter as very…dark.
My mother was distraught, and I was thrust into a care-taking role I was not prepared for.
I was confused - I didn’t even understand what death was.
I was faced with my own mortality and the mortality of everyone I loved.
My whole sense of security was called into question.
My mother tried to take my mind off of the loss with a few different distractions, but nothing really stuck until she remembered the comforting summers she spent growing up on her aunt’s horse farm and signed me up for horseback riding lessons.
I remember my first lesson and my first lesson horse - a very patient Paint named Tax. He was born on April 15th - tax day.
I remember the clouds parting and the fear lifting.
I felt calm and at peace at the barn.
I felt loved unconditionally by these incredible creatures.
I felt invincible on their backs.
Horses brought me out of the darkness from the loss of my dad and set me on a lifelong path in pursuit of the passion of being in their presence.
I am now incredibly fortunate to do what I love every day and introduce others to the joys of horseback riding through our trail riding program at Foxfire Farm!
Exploring the great outdoors through trail riding adventures offers a unique way to connect with nature and your inner self.
Whether you're an experienced rider or a beginner, trail rides provide numerous benefits for both your physical and mental well-being.
Let’s explore them!
Physical Fitness
Trail riding is an excellent form of exercise.
Did you know you can burn up to 250 calories per hour horseback riding at the walk, and 400 calories per hour at the trot?!
Riding a horse requires balance, coordination, and strength, and as you navigate different terrains, your body works to maintain stability and control.
This can help to improve your core strength, posture, and overall fitness level.
Plus, spending time outdoors is a great way to get fresh air and soak up some vitamin D!
Mental Health Benefits
Being in nature has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety.
Trail rides offer a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, especially for a busy mom like myself!
The rhythmic motion of riding a horse can be incredibly calming, helping to clear your mind and improve your mood.
It's an excellent way to practice mindfulness and enjoy the present moment.
We always say it’s almost like hypnosis!
Connection with Animals
Trail rides provide an opportunity to bond with your horse.
Horses are intuitive creatures, and building a connection with them can be incredibly rewarding.
We often tell guests that horses are mirrors, and they reflect back to us who we are and who we want to become.
This bond can enhance your riding experience, making it more enjoyable and fulfilling.
At Foxfire Farm, you'll find well-trained horses that are perfect for riders of all levels.
Social Interaction
Trail riding can be a great way to meet new people who share your interests!
Whether you join a guided tour or ride with friends, the shared experience of exploring trails can create lasting memories and a sense of true community.
